Key Highlights:

  • There is only one 7-seater SUV currently on sale in India: Mercedes-Benz EQB
  • Two choices in the MUV category will debut later this year: Kia Carens Clavis EV and MG M9 EV
  • There are no indications of a budget 7-seater EV launch in India this year

7-Seater Electric SUVs In India You Should Consider

Currently, there is only one three-row, 7-seater SUV available on the Indian market: the Mercedes-Benz EQB. Although they are MUVs, two products have been confirmed to launch later this year: Kia Carens Clavis EV and MG M9 EV. The anticipation for the former is particularly high, as its ICE counterpart has been a success since its debut in early 2022.

Here’s a detailed comparison of the three 7-seater electric vehicles in terms of pricing, range & specifications and top features. It is worth noting that none of the three EVs mentioned here belongs to the same category.

Kia Carens Clavis EV

Expected price
Expected to launch around mid-2025, prices are expected to range from Rs 19-24 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi).

Battery, range and performance
Sharing its EV architecture with the Hyundai Creta Electric, the Kia Carens Clavis EV will be offered in two battery formats: a standard 42 kWh pack, providing approximately 390 km of range, and a larger 51.4 kWh pack, supporting up to 490 km on a single charge. The front-mounted single-motor setup is expected to generate around 170bhp and 250Nm of torque as the Creta Electric. The torque figures could be slightly higher since the Carens Clavis EV is expected to be heavier with seven passengers and their luggage.

Key features

  • Dual 12.3‑inch digital displays in the dashboard (carried over from the ICE Carens Clavis)
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Advanced Level 2 driver assistance, including adaptive cruise control, lane‑keep assist, blind-spot monitor and automatic emergency braking

Why is it worth considering?
The Kia Carens Clavis EV, or simply Carens Electric, will be a very desirable choice in India’s MPV/MUV category. Its three-row setup makes it ideal for families, while the electric range of up to 490 km allows for longer road trips without frequent recharging. For those switching to electric vehicles for the first time but unwilling to compromise on luggage space and passenger capacity, the Carens EV appears to be a compelling package.

MG M9 EV

Expected price
Autocar India estimates a price of around Rs 65 lakh ex-showroom. Bookings have already started at a token amount of Rs 51,000 via MG Select. The electric MUV is expected to launch in mid-2025.

Battery, range and performance
The MG M9 EV is equipped with a 90 kWh Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery. Compared to the traditional Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, NMC cell chemistry offers higher energy density. The M9 churns out 245bhp and 350Nm via the motor mounted on the front axle. As per MG Motor’s internal testing, the M9 has a range of 548km on a single charge. It can reach a top speed of 180 km/h, while a 0-100 km/h dash takes approximately 9.9 seconds.

Key features

  • 12.23-inch touchscreen paired with JBL audio
  • Middle-row captain seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions
  • Panoramic sunroof at the rear (in addition to a single pane unit at the front)64-colour ambient lighting
  • Level 2 ADAS

Why is it worth considering?

The MG M9 EV will be the first model to be sold through the brand’s premium ‘MG Select’ network. In the initial phase, these new showrooms will open at 14 locations and will later become home to the stylish Cyberster electric sports car. The M9 is a welcome alternative to the likes of the ultra-luxury Toyota Vellfire and the popular favourite, Kia Carnival. It is interesting to note that this would be the only all-electric luxury MUV on sale in India.

Mercedes‑Benz EQB 7‑seater

Pricing & variants

Mercedes-Benz India offers the EQB in two variants.

  • 250+ (7-seater): Rs 70.90 lakh ex-showroom
  • 350 4Matic (5-seater): Rs 77.50 lakh ex-showroom

Battery, range and performance
Depending on the variant you choose, the Mercedes-Benz EQB is available with either a 70.5 kWh battery, promising 535 km of range, or a 66.5 kWh pack in dual-motor format (range drops to roughly 447 km). In the former 7-seater format, the EQB 250+ makes 188bhp and 385Nm of torque, while the latter 5-seater EQB 350 4Matic variant generates 288bhp and 520Nm. As the name suggests, the EQB 350 4Matic is an all-wheel-drive.

Key features

  • Dual 10.2‑inch (driver and infotainment) displays running MBUX Gen 2
  • 10-speaker Burmester sound system, wireless phone connectivity and charging, dual‑zone climate control
  • Level 2 ADAS including Distronic active cruise, lane‑keep assist, blind‑spot monitor, tyre pressure monitoring and 360-degree camera

Why is it worth considering?

The Mercedes-Benz EQB 250+ in India offers a compelling mix of seven-seat practicality, ample range, and premium EV features. It is positioned as an accessible luxury electric SUV for families, without taking up too much garage space. It has no direct rival in its category, but remains a bridge between Mercedes-Benz India’s entry-level choices and the upper mid-range.

Among the Three, What Should Be Your Pick?

If you are budget-conscious but wish to own a spacious, modern electric 7-seater, the Kia Carens Clavis EV is an excellent choice. Its impressive range, segment-defining features, and family-friendly layout give it strong appeal as a first electric car.

For those seeking a luxury passenger experience, the MG M9 EV is the ideal option. It serves as an effective alternative to ultra-luxury saloons, SUVs, and MPVs, which can cost significantly more.

If you prioritise brand value, but cannot compromise on a refined driving experience, the Mercedes-Benz EQB should be shortlisted. The added convenience of a 7-seat configuration in a compact package, with no worthy alternative, further makes it a special choice.
